Upon ceremonies such as imperial enthronement or imperial birthday, the Provincial Examination will add an additional imperial gratitude section on top of the original exam. The Provincial Examination occurs every lunar August. The passed scholars of the Provincial Examination are titled "Provincial Graduates", while the top passed scholar will be named Provincial Graduate with Highest Honors. The Metropolitan Examination occurs every year after the Provincial Examination, and the imperial gratitude section of the Metropolitan Examination will also occur the year after the Provincial Examination's imperial gratitude section. The Metropolitan Examination occurs on the lunar March. The passed scholars of the Metropolitan Examination are titled "Passed Scholars", with the top Passed Scholar titled the "Principal Graduate". On the day of release for both Provincial and Metropolitan Examinations, the Roster of Successful Candiates will be written in the venue--also called the Roster of Graduates--and will be presented to the Emperor with routine memorials. The Roster of Successful Candidates is also sent to various departments: within five days of the day of release, the record of the bureaucrats at the exmination venue, the examination itself, as well as the list of passed scholars will be copied and communicated to the Board of Rites and the Board of Personnel.

The Provincial Martial Arts Examination in the Qing take place every three years just like the Provincial Examination. Upon ceremonies such as imperial enthronement or imperial birthday, the Provincial Examination will add an additional imperial gratitude section on top of the original exam.  The martial arts Examination occurs every lunar August, right after the original examination. In the Qing Dynasty, the Provincial and Metropolitan Examination of Martial Arts have three tests. The first test is on horseback shooting, the second on stand-shooting, as well as various weight and force tasks. The third test examines strategy and dissertations. In 1807, the third test changed to copying martial texts from memory. The martial arts Metropolitan Examination occur every three years as well (one year after the provincial martial arts examination) and occured every lunar September with three tests (inner and outer tests). The imperial gratitude section of the martial arts examination takes place together with the original examination's imperial gratitude section. The Roster of Successful Candidates for martial arts examinations, both for Provincial and Metropolitan martial arts examinations, are presented to the Emperor after the day of release. The format of the Roster also follows the format of the original exmination, recording the bureaucrats' names on duty at the examination, the passed scholars' names, backgrounds, and ranks, and the scores of arrows shot accurately and measurement of martial skills. The Provincial Martial Examination at the Shuntian Prefecture is presented by the Prefecture Head. Other provinces' examination rosters are sent to the Boards, while the Metropolitan Examination is presented to the Emperor by the Board of War.
