Golden Lists/Golden Placard

After provincial graduates finished the Metropolitan Examination at the Board of Rites, the passed scholars (of the Metropolitan Examination) will attend the Palace Examination proctered by the Emperor. The passed scholars of the Palace Examination will be divided into three categories. The first category consists of three scholars: the first is the Principal Graduate, the second is the second graduate, and the third is the third graduate. The three scholars in the first category are endowed Metropolitan Graduate with Honors; the second category will be endowed Regular Metropolitan Graduate; the third category will be endowed  Associate Metropolitan Graduate. The Golden Placard is written by the Grand Secretariat, sealed with "The Emperor's Seal", and is posted outside the East Chang'An Gate by the Board of Rites. Only the Martial Arts Metropolitan Examination will have its Golden Placard written and posted by the Board of War outside the West Chang'An Gate. After three days, Golden Placards will be sent back to the Grand Secretariat for storage.

In 1844 (Year 24 of Daoguang), the main Golden List of the Palace Martial Arts Examination: "By the mandate of Heaven, the Emperor commands that this List be the list that details the world's eighty-two passed scholars in the Palace Martial Arts Examination. The first category of passed scholars will be given Principal Graduate; the second category of passed scholars shall be given second graduates; the third category will be given Associate Metropolitan Graduate.
